The Grand Marais Art Colony
Nurturing Creativity on the North Shore

Minnesota's longest-lived Art Colony began in 1947 as The Outdoor School of Painting, a project of the Minneapolis School of Art (now MCAD) and soon after became an independent entity known as The Grand Marais Art Colony.

Located on the rugged northshore of Lake Superior, the Art Colony is housed in the heart of the coastal village of Grand Marais in a converted picturesque church.

A recently completed Studio Building contains glass, ceramics, and print studios, a multi-purpose room and loft space for visual artists.

Today the Art Colony provides hands-on art classes for beginners to professionals, independent studio rental for artists, events and exhibits in the visual arts, ceramics, printmaking, glass and more.  Retreat to the Northwoods for learning, inspiration, creation and celebration.

Open Mon-Sat, 9 am - 4 pm

Student testimonal: "This was my first experience at the Grand Marais Art Colony and it was wonderful!  I felt inspired by my fellow students, my talented teacher and the gorgeous area of Grand Marais!"
