Curious about Japanese clay techniques? During this class, JD will demonstrate different throwing techniques on the Japanese style Karatsu kick wheel, such as throwing off the hump and coiling and paddling. JD will also demonstrate decorating techniques such as kohiki, hakime, mishima, scraffitto, iron painting and teapot handles using rattan and jute. There will also be a slide lecture on JD’s work, studio, kiln construction and local clays. Students are encouraged to try the wheel and techniques during class with hand-dug clay provided by JD.
